Familiars have been around forever. In the Salem witch trials, animals were also executed. They were assumed to be given to witches by the devil himself. Familiars were considered to take the form of any animal cat, dog, toad, owl, bird, snake, or any other creature. Cats were said to be the most favored form for these demons to take. They were said to go and do the witches bidding. Just like witches, they were sad to not be able to die. Pets were banned during the witch trial ties because they were said to be able to bewitch other people.
Even in shamanism and many other religions, familiars can be found. They were said to be able to go fight for their partner. However, the animals life force was said to be attached to heir partners. If they did not succeed in the battle, then their partner would die as well.
History
Finding a familiar isn't even your ability. Normally your familiar will find you. They have spirits, they have souls, you cant just make him or her your familiar. You should meditate on it and if you feel like it is what they want as well then you can do a dedication ceremony for your new familiar. They hold themselves higher than other animals and you can tell. They are highly intelligent. When you are around your familiar, you can feel your magickal energy become stronger and this will increase and enhance your workings.
Even though they are an animal, they will also have a working name for when they aid you in your workings. You can get this name during the dedication ceremony or just doing the most mundane of things.
Some witches think of a familiar as a pet, but others think that it is wrong to think of them as that.
